Wood and Friction

Today in Mrs. Surace's class we started to wonder if wood would get warmer when there was friction. While we were testing our theory on the rug, we saw a piece of scrap paper and I was wondering if this might do the same thing as wood because paper was made out of wood. Some students in our class thought paper was made from leaves and were very surprised to find out that it actually comes from the tree itself. I looked up videos on how to make paper so that we would be able to better understand this. Here is a link to a video teaching us how to make paper from scrap paper. Maybe we should give it a try!?

Friction Frenzy!!

Today was an awesome day in the third grade! I was so proud of Lee and Anabelle for making so many connections with our text in reading group this afternoon. We spent the afternoon looking up friction! We learned that some surfaces cause more friction than others, friction can cause heat, and that some objects get hotter from friction than others! We recorded our notes in our mini notebooks and posted them with our materials on the white board for Mrs. Surace to see when she gets back tomorrow! We also did a demonstration for the rest of the class on heat caused by friction using a carpet square and some pennies.

Before I met this class, science wasn't so exciting. Now I am always excited for another day of science exploration. Just want to send a big thank you out to Anabelle and Lee for making friction so interesting to their classmates and their student teacher this afternoon!

Dear 3rd Graders,
Is there a reason that I might have made certain words bold in my description of Anabelle and Lee's work today? What do these words have in common? Leave a comment with your answer and we'll talk about it later on in class.
